Marie Curie scholarship: EU citizens

One PhD position available at Bucharest Academy of Sciences

Short Project Description: The difficulties of managing the decision-making process within the EU institutions and at the national authorities' level due to several reasons such as legal framework, particular organizational structures, and different formal and informal practices - tend to affect the capacity of the EC in having effective policies. Another reason is coming from particular EC decision-making procedures which influence significantly the quality of line policies. BAES in cooperation with other partners will examine the various factors which influence the EC and the national authorities' decision-making processes. Based on the obtained results, a networking proposal for improving the inter/level cooperation will be designed. The new model will be oriented on redesigning the network structure for the decision making process within EU institutions and at the national level, including the accountability and supervision as well as control of legality and composite procedures appropriate for the network of actors.

Links with other partners and projects: This research has clear links with the research project at the University of Luxembourg who also focuses on inter-level cooperation. Furthermore BAES will also cooperate with the partners who are involved in research on intra-institutional cooperation within the EU institutions and with those who will do research on co-operation along policy lines level. This will not only allow a comparison between the EU level institutions and national authorities, it will also provide a consistent base for future research on inter-level cooperation, including the cooperation within composite procedures with input from the member states and the national agencies and institutions.

PhD position: Non-Accident Based Approach to Managing Hazardous Road Locations, Aalborg University, Denmark

Position No.
20-10077

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Development and Planning a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Planning and Development. The stipend is open for appointment as from December 1, 2010.

Job description
The PhD position is available within the research field "Traffic Research":

Non-Accident Based Approach to Managing Hazardous Road Locations

Traditional black spot management based on accident records fail to identify the most hazardous road locations with certainty. Amongst other things this is due to a severe underreporting of accidents. Especially for rural roads such a underreporting appears. The aim of the project will, consequently, be upon developing non-accident based methods for identification, analysis, diagnosing, and treatment and prioritizing of hazardous road locations. Focus will be to investigate and develop methods based upon characteristics related to road layout and design. This requires that the road layout characteristics most significantly affecting accident and injury rates as well as accident severity are identified, described and quantified. The project will be funded and carried out in cooperation with road authorities in a number of Danish municipalities. Candidates must be fluent in speaking and writing a Scandinavian language.

Position No.
18-10094

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering, Aalborg University in collaboration with the Department of Clinical Immunology and Regional Transfusion Centre, Aalborg Hospital, a PhD Stipend is open for appointment as from December 1, 2010.

The position is available within the general study programme Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering.

Job description
Functional aspects of MHC class II molecules on T-cells

For several decades it has been observed both in vitro and in vivo that proteins considered as being cell-specific were found on the surface of other cell types. In this context, it has been demonstrated that T-cells can acquire MHC class II molecules from other immune cells. The significance of this acquisition has been proposed to relate to immune amplification, regulation, and tolerance. However, the exact molecular and cellular mechanisms as well as the functional consequences of this intercellular protein transfer have yet to be delineated.
This project is aimed at elucidating the functional aspects of the in vitro intercellular trans-fer of MHC class II molecules from human antigen presenting cells to T-cells in different inflammatory milieus. The cellular and molecular mechanisms pertaining to the acquisition will also be investigated. The study will employ and combine methodologies and technologies of immunology and mass spectrometry driven proteomics.

PhD position: Sub-sea 20 MW Generator for Floating Darreius Wind Turbine, Aalborg University, Denmark

Position No.
14-10092

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Department of Energy Techonolgy a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Energy Technology. The stipend is open for appointment from December 1, 2010.

Job description
Sub-sea 20 MW Generator for Floating Darreius Wind Turbine

The PhD position offered here forms a part of the general study programme “Energy Engineering” and forms part of the "DeepWind” project sponsored by The European Commission FP7 Framework Programme and Aalborg University, Department of Energy in the field of electrical machines.

The generic content of the DeepWind project is as follows:

The hypothesis of this project is that a new wind turbine concept developed specifically for offshore application has potentials for better cost efficiency than existing offshore technology. Based on this hypothesis the objectives are: i) to explore the technologies needed for development of a new and simple floating offshore concept with a vertical axis rotor and a floating and rotating foundation, ii) to develop calculation and design tools for development and evaluation of very large wind turbines based on this concept and iii) evaluation of the overall concept with floating offshore horizontal axis wind turbines.

DeepWind – Generator Concepts

The challenges of the generator are associated with the watertight generator design, and the special operation and conditions of the vertical-axis design. Because of the challenges of deep sea conditions, known technologies are critical and they need to be investigated and their capability determined. The low speed, high power feature of the Darrieus wind turbine rotor present special challenges that must be addressed. Specific challenges are: the mechanical power transfer, where also rotor thrust may be transferred; the mechanical geometry to be built into the turbine design; the electro-magnetic functional concept, cooling method, insulation concept, electrical power regulation and electrical coupling to the grid under the special deep sea conditions. A key challenge of the generator concept is that torque density must be improved to address the low speed, high power requirement. A further challenge is sealing of the shaft, where a concept for waterproof magnetic bearings, including magnetic functional concept, design, and cooling will be developed. The assumed control strategy provides generator control by means of a frequency converter between the generator and the grid. The frequency converter will be provided by a collaborative project at the Department of Energy. Voltage control and transfer of reactive power must be assessed. This will require collaboration with the DeepWind Turbine Control System work package. The generator will be developed using analytic studies, numerical simulations and laboratory tests. The results will be validated design tools for large scale generator solutions.

Some teaching activity will be required.

General conditions:

Applicants should posses a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering and should have a sound background in physics and mathematics. Good simulation skills and a sharp interest in practical investigation are also required. A plus will be the familiarity of the candidate with wind power systems.
The successful applicant will interact with other doctoral students, faculty, researchers and technicians from industry, in a challenging environment. Candidates should be willing to and capable of working as part of the project research team, but should also be willing to and capable of carrying out independent, advanced, theoretical and practical research. He/she must have good communication skills and be fluent in English.

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Ewen Ritchie , Department of Energy Technology, phone: 9940 9241 , email: aer@et.aau.dk concerning the technical aspects of the stipend.

Position No.
13-10076

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Physics and Nanotechnology a number of PhD stipends are available within the general study programme in Mathematics and Physics. The stipends are open for appointment from 1st of December 2010.

Job description
The projects will be closely related to ongoing research project in the fields of light emitting semiconductor nanostructures, enhancement of light absorption in solar cells by plasmons, and fabrication and testing of active plasmonic structures.
The PhD projects should be described within the following fields:

1. Growth and optical characterization of nanocrystalline Si layer for photovoltaics. Nanocrystalline Si is a very promising material as active layer in solar cells. In the project such layers should be synthesized and characterized. In particular the optical properties should be investigated as a function of various parameters such as size and surface terminations of the nanocrystals.
2. STM and AFM studies of cross sections containing embedded nanostructures. The functionality of embedded nanostructures intended for instance for light scattering and field enhancement in solar cells depends strongly on size, shape, position, and in some cases also structure of the nanostructures. In the project the possibilities for using scanning probe techniques for characterization of nanostructures embedded in both insulating and semiconducting layers should be investigated.
3. Coupling of light emission from nanostructures to plasmonic waveguides. An important element in the development of active plasmonic components, for instance for sensor technology, is integration of light emitting elements that couple directly to plasmons and to guiding structures. In the project light emitting semiconductor nanostructures should be synthesized on or deposited on plasmonic structures and the coupling of light to plasmons should be characterized.

Research at Department of Physics and Nanotechnology covers various aspects of nanotechnology in relation to optics, materials, biotechnology, and molecular engineering.
