MRC Dorothy Hodgkin Research 3-year MPhil/PhD Studentship Institute Of Ophthalmology, University College London

1st October 2006

An MPhil/PhD studentship is available under the supervision of Dr M Francesca Cordeiro and Professor Tom Salt at the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology (an excellent 5**-rated research institution). Under the terms of the Dorothy Hodgkin award, only nationals from the following countries are eligible to apply: India, China, Hong Kong, South Africa, Brazil, Russia and the developing world. Applicants must hold
a high-grade qualification, equivalent to a UK first class honours degree from a prestigious institution.

The studentship will include the payment of fees and an annual stipend of around £14,000 per annum. The funding is available from 1st October 2006.

For information about the research undertaken by Dr Cordeiro's laboratory, please see this website: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/glaucoma-retinal-neurodegen/

The project will focus on new approaches for the early clinical diagnostic evaluation of, and highlight novel therapeutic strategies for, glaucoma and neurodegenerative retinal conditions, before significant visual loss occurs. The proposed project will use the expertise and very well equipped laboratories in Dr Cordeiro's group combined with the neuroscience research facilities of Professor Salt's group and their multi-disciplinary team of collaborators, providing a
combined resource that is not available elsewhere. The student will acquire techniques applicable to in vivo modelling of disease, including imaging, electrophysiology, histology and cell biology. This will also involve design of experimental protocols, quantification of physiological and pharmacological responses, and the use of computers to control experiments and collect and analyse data.

Application forms can be downloaded from the UCL web site at http://www.ucl.ac.uk/prospective-students/graduate-study. Completed application forms should be sent to Jane Molyneux, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology, 11-43 Bath Street, EC1V 9EL or emailed to j.molyneux@ucl.ac.uk, no later than 25 August 2006
