The Danish Folk High School Grant Scheme

Grants for courses at Danish folk high schools for young people from the new EU member states.

More than 540.500 euros were allocated in 2005 by the Danish Parliament to support young people from the 10 new EU member states to participate in courses at Danish Folk High Schools. For 2006 an amount of nearly 400.000 euros has been set aside for the programme, and we expect a similar amount to be allocated for 2007.

A folk high school, which is not compatible to the high schools found in Anglo-Saxon countries, is a non-formal adult residential school offering learning opportunities in almost any subject including history, arts, music, sports, philosophy, theatre, photography etc. The folk high schools are part of a Danish tradition of popular education. The schools individually decide the content of the courses and there are no test or exams.

The courses must have a minimum duration of 12 weeks (if the student leaves before, the grant is cancelled, and all costs are to be paid by the student). The students have to be at least 17½ years old (16½ in the three youth folk high schools), be citizens of, and have permanent residence in one of the following new EU-member states:

a.. Cyprus
b.. Czech Republic
c.. Estonia
d.. Hungary
e.. Latvia
f.. Lithuania
g.. Malta
h.. Poland
i.. Slovakia
j.. Slovenia

The Folk High School courses are supported by the Danish state. The normal tuition fee is between 750-1400 DKK per week, which includes board and lodging. Students from the new member states can get 600 DKK per week covered through the Grant Scheme, to meet the tuition fee.

Application for grants should be made by the Danish folk high schools on behalf of the student.

The next application deadline for the folk high schools is December 1, 2006 for courses from 1 of January, 2007 to 30 June, 2006. This means that students should contact the Danish Folk High School in good time before December, in order to agree about admittance.

The participants need residence permits if they stay in Denmark for more than 12 weeks. Applications should be applied for in good time before the courses begin, at the nearest Danish Embassy. The Danish embassies in the relevant countries has been notified about the scheme, as has The Danish Immigration Service.

For further information about the courses please contact the Danish Folk High Schools. Details of contact can be found at the website: www.hojskolerne. dk.
