Ph.D. position within the area “Adaptive Antennas in Arbitrary Structures"

Ph.D. position within the area “Adaptive Antennas in Arbitrary Structures” at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway, – Jnr. IME-066-2006.

A scholarship is offered within the area of Adaptive Antennas in arbitrary Structures at the Department of Electronics and Telecommunications (http://www.iet. ntnu.no) , Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

The Ph.D.-position is part of the research programme, “SWiPT -- Secure Wireless Positioning and Transactions” and is funded by the Norwegian Research Council and Telenor under the program “User-defined innovation arenas”.

The SWiPT project is a joint project between NTNU, Kongsberg-Seatex AS, Radionor Communications AS, Telenor Mobil and Telenor R&I. The project management is with Telenor R&I. The project addresses technology in the area of active RFID and aims at developing technology for demonstration of new services based on active RFID in both the maritime and the telecom sector. The scholarship addresses the aspect of near-field limited communications for active RFID modules.

The background of the project is the rapid emergence of new services based on short range RFID, e.g. communications with emphasis on localisation and payment services.
The thematic contents of the Ph.D. studies and project work are:
◦ Electromagnetic wave propagation,
◦ Antennas,
◦ Receiver design,
◦ Signal processing,
The detailed contents of the Ph.D. studies and project work will to some extent depend on the interests and background of the student, but the candidate must have an academic background with main focus on antenna design and electromagnetic wave propagation.

Applicants must have relevant education as M.Sc. or similar and documented qualification as required of doctoral students at NTNU.

Award holders at NTNU are normally appointed for 4 years with 25% of the time spent on specified work. The objective of the grant is to obtain a PhD degree, hence the successful applicant must be enrolled as a PhD candidate at NTNU. See also information about PhD education at NTNU at www.ime.ntnu. no/Dr.gradsstudi er/

Further information can be obtained from Professor Börje Forssell, Dept. of Electronics and Telecommunications, NTNU; tel. +47 73 59 26 53, e-mail forssell@iet. ntnu.no.

The appointment is at code 1017, salary level 41-58 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK. 310.500 – 418.200 per annum (1 NOK ~ 0.125 EUR), of which 2% is deducted for the State Pension scheme.

The appointment will be made in accordance with current regulations with supplementary rules for research fellowship appointments in universities and polytechnics. Applicants must agree to participate in organised doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment. The successful applicant must agree to the conditions laid down for public employees. A contract will be drawn up regarding the period of appointment and work-related duties for award holders.

The national labour force must reflect the composition of the population to the greatest possible extent. It is therefore a major political objective to achieve a balance of age and gender and to recruit persons with an immigrant background. Immigrants are encouraged to apply for this post. NTNU wants to increase the proportion of women in its scientific posts. Women are encouraged to apply.

The application must contain information about education, examinations and previous experience. Certified copies of testimonies and documents must be attached.

Copies of publications and any other work which the applicant wishes to be taken into account should also be enclosed. Joint works will be considered. If it is difficult to specify the input of the applicant in a joint work, a short summary should be attached outlining the applicant's input.

Applications are to be sent to the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Information Technology, Mathematics and Electrical Engineering, Sem Sælands vei 5, N 7491 Trondheim, Norway. Applications should be marked Jnr. IME-066-2006. Closing date: 04.12.06.
