FLAS Fellowships in East European and Central Asian languages
Title VI Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships are awarded to universities in order to promote the graduate training of students who intend to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign cultures is a prerequisite for success. Only US citizens and permanent residents are eligible for FLAS fellowships. Holders of
FLAS fellowships must undertake full-time study during the period of the award and be enrolled in formal language instruction in the language of the award and take one area study course each semester.
1. Academic Year 2007-2008 FLAS:
Each fellowship covers the academic year and carries a stipend of $15,000. In addition, the fellowship provides a fee scholarship of 12 credits of course work each semester (a total of 24 credits). Recipients of FLAS fellowships must undertake full-time study during the period of the award and be enrolled in formal instruction in the language of the award.
IAUNRC will accept applications for the study of the following languages in the academic year 2007/2008: Estonian, Finnish, Hungarian, Kazakh, Mongolian, Persian/Tajik, Turkish, Uzbek, and Uyghur. If you wish to take a level 3 or beyond of a language not included in the regular IU schedule of classes, you may apply for the Advanced Directed Language Study. Applications should include:
*One FLAS application
*One complete set of official transcripts of college and university credits
*Three letters of recommendation, at least one of which should address the applicant's abilities in foreign language training
*Statement on language training and proposed program of study
* ADLS application if applicable

2. Summer 2007 FLAS for Non-IU Language Instruction:
Title VI FLAS fellowships may be awarded to an Indiana University student for summer language instruction at another institution (in the U.S. or abroad) in a language or level of language study not available at IU SWSEEL. The award includes a $2,400 stipend and fee scholarship. Applicants for the summer FLAS for a non-SWSEEL program
should fill out the academic year FLAS application and submit it to IAUNRC by March 1, 2007.
3. Summer 2007 FLAS for SWSEEL:
Title VI FLAS fellowships are awarded to graduate students enrolled in intensive instruction in the Indiana University Summer Workshop in Slavic, East European, and Central Languages (SWSEEL). Eligible languages will include Azeri, Kazakh, Mongolian, Tajik, Turkmen, Uyghur, and Uzbek. Awards include stipends of $2,500 plus fee scholarship.
