This Master Course offers an original qualification in the highly innovative domain of molecular photonics for telecommunications and biology. Skills will be acquired at the strongly interdisciplinary level needed to master emerging technologies and to develop original concepts and applications aiming at novel technological breakthroughs in this domain.
The professor/student ratio is about 3 professors for 2 students. Lectures are in English and Spanish.
This integrated study program starts with a common basic training at ENS Cachan (Fundamentals in Photonics and Biology, langague modules). The second semester is spent either at Complutense, (Organic chemistry and sensors), or at the University of Wroclaw, (Biochemistry and modelling). At the end of the first year a summer school will be organized and devoted to a research topic relevant to the Master Program. The third semester will be spent either in Cachan (materials and photonic devices for optical signal processing or biological applications), or at the Wroclaw University of Technology (optoelectronics and photonics for life sciences). The last semester will be fully devoted to a research project in an Academic or Industry laboratory.
In order to ensure a really multidisciplinary training, students will have to acquire at least 20 ECTS in each discipline.
Degrees awarded by each institutions are: Master Degree in Molecular Photonics for bio- and nanotechnologies (ENS Cachan); National Master Degree in Molecular nano- and bio-photonics for telecommunications and biotechnologies (Universidad Complutense, Madrid); MsC in Chemistry (University of Wroclaw); MSc Eng in Materials Science (WUT) ). All ECTS units acquired at one place are recognized by the other Institutions. The Master is meant to deliver joined diplomas in a near future.
Applicants having successfully performed at least 3 years of Academic training are eligible for application. Admission criteria are based on previously obtained marks, training contents, scientific excellence of training Institutions, motivation and recommendation letters, awards and excellence grants, language skills.
The European Commission will fund individual two year scholarships of € 21 000 a year for third-country students. For 2006-2007, 12 grants for third-country students and 12 additional grants for Asian student fullfilling the "Asian Window" criteria will be awarded.
Registration fees are € 6 000 per year , to be paid to the Coordinator at the beginning of the Academic year. Students are expected to finance their accommodation, insurances, living cost and travel costs themselves. The respective institutes have services for foreign students that can provide assistance in arranging accommodation, insurances and other living arrangements.
Third-country scholars are invited to apply for a scholarship during Academic Year 2006-2007. Erasmus Mundus offers 4 grants per consortium and per year.
