The Nordic Welfare States – Revisited
Regional issue, Social Policy & Administration, 2011
In the literature the Nordic welfare state is associated with equality (economic and gender), universalism in access to benefits and services, and full employment. These are welfare states in relation not only to income transfers but also to welfare services. A high degree of solidarity and cradle-to-grave welfare has also been prominent, as has intergenerational solidarity.
A core question is whether the Nordic welfare states can still be seen as a distinct cluster. Profound changes have taken place, reducing the focus on full employment and equality, and introducing new balances between the state and the market. There has been an increase in the use of the market as main provider, and new types of inequalities have developed in the Nordic welfare states.
Timetable: a detailed abstract around 1 January 2010, and final papers by 1 June 2010, as the issue is due to be published in February/March 2011. Papers will be peer-reviewed.
