The position is mainly concerned with the design and implementation of the MCDB database system. You can find out more about MCDB by reading our initial paper on the subject, available at the ACM Digital Library at http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=1376616.1376686. MCDB is a joint project between Rice and IBM Almaden. We are specifically interested in moving MCDB to a distributed computing platform, such as Hadoop. While the postdoc is concerned primarily with MCDB, it is anticipated that the researcher will have significant time to pursue other research topics of his or her choosing.
A high-quality PhD degree in computer science is required. The ideal candidate would have a good understanding of database system design and implementation. A background in statistics or probability theory is a definite plus.
The position would begin as soon as possible, but no later than August, 2010. The position requires a two-year commitment on the part of the candidate.
