Two PhD positions Plant Stress Response (Bayreuth)

The Department of Plant Physiology/ Juniorprofessur Plant Genetics at the University Bayreuth has available from 01.04.2010 on two PhD positions (TV-L E 13 50%) for 3 years each.

The main topic of the research will be "Plants under oxygen deficiency". This stress occurs when soils are wet or flooded, and leads to dramatic changes in plant primary metabolism. Based on actual results (Mustroph et al. 2009, PNAS 106:18843-8; Mustroph et al. 2010, Plant Physiology Preview) we will focus on some interesting aspects of the topic. One project will concentrate on the analysis of transcription factors in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana under oxygen deficiency stress. The second project will evaluate the primary metabolism under oxygen deficiency in different model plants, such as potato and rice.

Teaching duties 2,5 hours

The research will include:
- Production, growth and selection of transgenic plants
- Methods of molecular biology (DNA, RNA, protein analyses)
- Biochemical methods, for example measurement of enzyme activities
- Yeast-two-hybrid- system
- Immunoprecipitation

We expect from you:
- A degree in biology or biochemistry (master, diploma) or equivalent
- Experiences in the lab, preferentially in the work with plants
- High motivation and pleasure in performing experiments
