PhD, Multiwave, Porto and National University of Ireland, Galway

Pulsed Fibre Laser for Medical Applications Pulsed fibre lasers capable of generating nanosecond pulses in the 1 µm wavelength region are becoming increasingly interesting for a number of applications. For medicine, in particular, their potential small size and reliability could open doors to many diagnostic and treatment applications, and in some of these applications, optical coherence tomography techniques provided by other fibre-based optical sources could even be used in parallel.

To improve their flexibility, a Master Oscillator - Power Amplifier (MOPA) that allows for wide adjustment ranges for both pulsewidth and repetition rates will be explored.

Innovative Aspects: The PhD student will study and develop a compact and small size pulsed fibre laser source oscillating in the 1 µm region, in a MOPA configuration. This configuration will utilize a Pulsed Seed Laser built around a specially driven semiconductor laser.

Specific Skills Acquired by the Candidate: Fibre optic technology, lasers and fibre optic amplifiers, general optoelectronics and electronics, software programming. The program is intended for young researchers, with less than 4 years research experience.

The applicants must have a good background in theoretical and experimental optics, and expected to have graduate in Physics (Optics) or Electrical and Electronic Engineering.

We are looking for highly imaginative and self-motivated individuals. The PhD student will spend most of the time on the site of Multiwave Photonics S.A., in Porto with a short training stage of up to 10 months in the the NCLA (http://www.ncla.ie) , National University of Ireland, Galway.

Multiwave Photonics S.A. develops advanced optical sources based on state-of-the-art fibre-optic technologies, as well as optoelectronic sub-systems for applications in industry, medicine and instrumentation. Multiwave?s products include lasers, broadband sources, narrowband sources, optical amplifiers and specializ
