PhD Research Studentship in Cement Technology - University of Leeds

PhD Research Studentship Carbonation of hardened cements
School of Civil Engineering / Institute for Materials Research
*(UK, EU and International students are eligible to apply)*

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship under the supervision of Dr I G Richardson in the School of Civil Engineering and Prof. R M D Brydson in the Institute for Materials Research.

The studentship is funded by UK Nirex Ltd. (http://www.nirex. co.uk/index. htm), which has developed a Phased Geological Repository Concept (PGRC) for the long-term management of radioactive waste. The concept is based on a deep geological repository and includes a number of stages in the management and eventual disposal of radioactive waste. Cement-based materials are currently used to encapsulate intermediate- level wastes and in the PGRC concept, would also be used as an engineered barrier within a deep geological repository. There is a need to improve understanding of how the phases in the hardened cements react with carbon dioxide, which is the subject of this studentship. Note that *there will be no radioactive material involved in the work*. The main experimental techniques will be backscattered electron imaging of flat polished sections (with image analysis), analytical transmission electron microscopy, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction and thermal analysis.

The successful applicant will hold a minimum 2(i) first degree in a relevant discipline (Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences, etc.).

*Please note that UK, EU and International students are eligible for a full award*. This includes academic fees and a maintenance grant of £12300 (tax free) in the first year, £12600 in the second year, and £12900 in the third year. The earliest start date will be the 1st January 2007.

*To apply, please send a CV, including the name of at least one academic referee, to Dr Ian Richardson, School of Civil Engineering, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT, UK or to* i.g.richardson@ leeds.ac. uk. Informal enquiries may be made by telephone on +44 (0) 113 343 2331 or by e-mail. Click here for Employer Profile
