PhD Studentship in Civil Engineering - Imperial College of London

PhD Studentship Seismic Performance of Hybrid Steel/Concrete Column/Slab Systems
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to work on the above research project in the area of Structural Earthquake Engineering. Applicants must have a first degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering and preferably a Masters degree (or equivalent) in Structural Engineering or Earthquake Engineering. Previous experience in structural design or structural engineering research would be advantageous.

The research will involve a detailed investigation into the seismic performance of composite systems consisting of tubular steel columns and reinforced concrete flat slabs. An experimental study will be undertaken in order to investigate the behaviour of representative structural assemblages incorporating novel connection configurations. The work will also include significant modelling and analytical aspects using nonlinear finite element procedures. The findings from this investigation will be used to generate information relevant for seismic design codes.

The studentship, which is funded by Corus within a collaborative industrial/academic project, comprises a bursary for three years at around £14,000 per year together with College fees at the home/EU rate. International students may be considered for supplementary funding to cover the difference between home/EU and oversees fees.

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr. A. Elghazouli (a.elghazouli@ imperial. ac.uk; Tel: 020 7594 6021) or Dr. R. Vollum (r.vollum@imperial. ac.uk; Tel: 020 7594 5992).

Applicants should submit a CV, including the names and contact details of two referees (by post or e-mail), to:
Dr Ahmed Elghazouli
Head of Structures Section
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
Imperial College London, South Kensington Campus
