2007 LCT- European Masters Program in Language and Communication

The Joint European Master programme in Environmental Studies (JEMES) is offered by four leading European universities in environmental research and education, each one with specific knowledge in the field, who joined forces to provide an integrated, state-of-the-art technological and management education.

Structure
JEMES is particular in its interdisciplinary character, the close link between practical and theoretical components, the project character of many courses, the research-based thesis, and the "shift of perspective" all students have to undergo during training.
In its two streams, Environmental Technology Engineering and Environmental Management Engineering, JEMES interweaves technological and management education, research-based courses and intensive practical exercises on a high academic level. Students start in one stream, do the second semester in the other and then decide in which direction to specialise. The last semester is entirely devoted to thesis research.
The programme enables students to profit from the specific expertise available at each partner and offers an exceptional good student-professor ratio of 1:2,5. Language of education is English. A distribution of 50% third country and 50% European students is intended. Staff mobility is an integral part of JEMES. The duration of the programme is 2 years (120 ECTS). More Information …

Degree and Employability
Students will obtain a Master of Science degree in Environmental Studies jointly awarded by all universities. The joint Degrees will be recognised in all partner countries. Training will provide students with a solid and broad scientific background in the field and important abilities and qualifications such as problem solving, teamwork, management of complex environmental processes, analytical competency, not to mention high intercultural awareness and excellent communication skills, fluency in English and knowledge of other European languages, a network of valuable contacts.
By bringing scholars and students from all over the world together in a rich and challenging international study programme with tailor made pathways, real-world experience and profound research knowledge, JEMES trains prospective European and Overseas environmental specialists whose sound education in innovative technologies and management strategies will enable them to treat environmental problems from an interdisciplinary point of view. Training considers the needs in developing as well as in industrialised countries. Graduates will successfully handle all major aspects of their professional field and have an extensive overview of new developments and future trends in the area. Graduates will enjoy privileged access to prominent enterprises and institutions in the in public and private sector worldwide. More Information …

Requirements
JEMES offers a scientific and theory-oriented education on a high academic level and with strong emphasis on project work to highly motivated students. A joint committee with representatives of each university selects the students competitively. Applicants have to hold a good undergraduate degree with relevance to environmental studies, must submit a personal motivation statement and recommendation letters. To ensure proficiency in English, a TOEFL score of 550 (PBT), 213 (CBT) or 79 (IBT) is required.

Fees
General fees of 3000 € per year will be charged for the programme. All students have to pay the same amount of fees, regardless of their origin. The fees contain tuition, administrative fees and extra costs for the organisation of the programme. They will be used for

Covering actual costs at each university
Promotion of the programme and marketing
Administrative costs of the coordinating university
Mobility grants for students
Staff meetings and teacher exchange
Establishing enhanced quality assurance mechanisms
Other related costs
For reasons of simplicity of administration, all fees have to be paid to the Universidade de Aveiro, regardless where the student wishes to start.
Please note that in case of mobility from your home university (i.e. the university where you start the programme) to one of the other JEMES universities, you may be asked to pay some additional charges at the host university (e.g. for subsidised use of public transport, contribution to independent student union/association etc.)

Services
The International Offices of the partner universities are the main contact points for incoming students and scholars and are experienced to handle most situations. They will facilitate the administrative tasks of mobility, offer various services and support the incomers in daily problems they may have.
All students will be provided with a common JEMES manual with information on each university / surrounding, structures, procedures, assistance, language offers etc. JEMES staff will edit the first edition of this manual. Then, the students will do annual re-editions. Academic tutors who teach in the programme will be appointed to each student per term to assist the student in all academic matters. The tutor will change when the student moves to another institution; if he/she returns to the previous institution, the same tutor as before shall be in charge again.
Additionally, a personal student mentor will be assigned to each student throughout semester 1. This mentor assists in all practical matters (paper work, orientation on campus and in town, leisure activities etc). Orientation days/weeks will be arranged at the beginning of every semester.
