CfP: 22nd Global Conference of the International Peace Research Association

We would like to announce the 2008 IPRA Global Conference, Building Sustainable Futures: Enacting Peace and Development to be hosted by the University of Leuven, Belgium from 15-19 July 2008. The overall theme of the conference focuses on the interaction between economic development, environmental change and conflict prevention and peace building efforts in the 21st century. Sustainable development cannot succeed without adequate efforts to build sustainable peace at local, national, regional and global levels.

We expect approximately 150 panels and roundtables organised by IPRA’s specialised Commissions and Working Groups (see website: www.ipraweb. org) and plenaries on: Human Security and Development, African Peace Building, Peace Research in Latin America, Listening to the Middle East, Peace and Intellectual Solidarity, Effective Nonviolent Policy-Making, Youth and Conflict/Peace, Celebrating the Founders of Peace
Research, and Faith in Peace. You are invited to participate in the upcoming conference by proposing a panel, roundtable or paper to a Commission or Working
Group. For more information and online application until 1 October 2007, go to www.ipra2008. org.

The International Peace Research Association (IPRA) was established by John Burton, Elise and Kenneth Boulding and others, IPRA has been researching the conditions of sustainable peace and the causes of violence since 1964. IPRA seeks to review the state of peace research and advance the study of cutting edge issues affecting peace all over the world. At its global conferences, scholars, peace practitioners and
decision-makers from every continent and all sides of conflicts share their findings and pursue new initiatives. These interactions occur both at the specialized level through IPRA’s numerous Commissions’ and Working Groups’ panels as well as through
plenaries addressing far-reaching issues. For a list of these thematic Commissions and Working Groups as well as our regional associations of peace research, see our brochure or website (www.ipraweb. org). Here you may also find details, links and how to become a member.

Last summer we were pleased to host 400 participants from 59 countries at our 21st biennial conference, Patterns of Conflict, Paths to Peace in Calgary, Canada (ipra2006.com) . The plenary sessions focused on: peace journalism, the meaning of professionalism in peace building, peace building architecture, security with a human face, regional developments in peace research, and Canadian First Nations on peace. If you were not there, we hope to see you in Leuven.
