Call for Papers: "After Kemalism? What was/is Kemalism?..." in April 4-5, 2008

"After Kemalism? What was/is Kemalism? What did/does It Mean to Different People?" will be the first of its kind international and interdisciplinary conference solely devoted to the investigation of different aspects of Kemalism. The conference will be held at the University of California, Berkeley, in April 4-5, 2008. This conference is sponsored in part by the Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities and the Center for Middle Eastern Studies, both located at the University of California, Berkeley.

The conference organizing committee invites submissions for presentations/ papers pertaining to the ways in which Kemalism operates/operated in different social, political, artistic and academic discourses and fields. Apart from providing an
interdisciplinary forum for discussing various meanings of Kemalism, its historical trajectory and legacy, and its current manifestations, this conference aims to collect and organize a select number of outstanding papers into an edited volume to serve as a reference book in English about Kemalism. Papers are invited on topics including but not limited to the following:

-Kemalism and/in Archeology,
-Kemalism and/in Art History,
-Kemalism and/in Architecture and Urban Planning,
-Kemalism and/in Cinema,
-Kemalism and/in Theater and the Performing Arts,
-Kemalism and Religion,
-Kemalism and Democracy,
-Kemalism and Ethnicity,
-Kemalism and/in Music,
Kemalism and/in Literature,
Kemalism and/in Poetry,
-Kemalism and/in the Economy,
-Kemalism in Foreign Policy and International Relations,
-Kemalism and/in everyday language and Linguistics,
-Kemalism and/in everyday life
-Kemalism and Ataturk's personality cult,
-Kemalism and Socialism,
-Kemalism and Nationalism,
-Kemalism and Liberalism,
-Kemalism and/in the Village,
-Kemalism and/in the Dress code,
-Kemalism and/in Historiography,
-Kemalism and/in the Military,
-Kemalism and/in/after the 1960 coup,
-Kemalism and/in/after the 1980 coup,
-Kemalism and Kemalists in the 21st century,
-Kemalism and Central Asia,

Please submit an abstract between 200 and 500 words, along with your name, e-mail address, institutional affiliation, and a one page CV, by JANUARY 1, 2008. Authors of selected paper abstracts will be notified by JANUARY 30, 2008, and full papers, which should not be longer than 5,000 words, need to be e-mailed by MARCH 15, 2008.
