Hispanic Students and Study Abroad

We believe that, in today’s increasingly interconnected world, every student should study abroad at some point in his or her college career. It is inevitable that today’s college students will work, partner or compete with people from around the world during the course of their careers.

Right now, Hispanic college students study abroad at about 50% the rate of non-Hispanic students.

In order to become the global leaders that the United States and the world need, Hispanic students need to be prepared for the opportunities and challenges that globalization presents.

Hispanic Study Abroad Scholars Program

HACU: The Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities has partnered with Global Learning Semesters to increase the number of Hispanic students engaged in study abroad. Over the next ten years, the goal of our far-reaching partnership, the Hispanic Global Alliance is to reduce this gap and help tens of thousands more Hispanic students study abroad.

The Hispanic Study Abroad Scholars scholarship is one of the main components of our partnership.

Global Learning Semesters has committed to making available at least $8 million in scholarship funds to HACU students over the next ten years.

We believe these scholarships will improve the affordability of study abroad for HACU students – with the HSAS scholarships, some Global Learning Semesters programs are among the best-priced comprehensive study abroad programs in Europe.

Eligibility

You are eligible for the HSAS program if you are attending a semester-long Global Learning Semesters program and attend a HACU member institution that has activated its HSAS account.

Generally speaking, students applying to Global Learning Semesters programs must meet the following criteria:
Be at least 18 years of age
Have completed at least two semesters in college by the time of the program or earned the equivalent credits
Be in good disciplinary and academic standing
Have a minimum GPA of 2.5

How to Apply

Applying to the HSAS program is very simple. If you attend a HACU institution and are applying to a Global Learning Semesters program, you will automatically see two additional questions on your online application.

The questions that you will be asked are:

1. Would you like to submit an application for the HSAS program?

2. Please write a brief personal statement explaining how you believe Study Abroad will be important to your personal and career development?

Your information will be forwarded to the representative from your home institution who will make the final nomination decision.
