From 1 September 2008 the Department of Art History has vacancies for two Ph.D. students in the research project Cultures of Collecting. The Leiden Anatomical Collections in Context.
Project description:
The general aim of the project is a description and analysis of anatomical collections from a humanities perspective. The project investigates how historical and cultural practices and concerns have shaped anatomical preparations and how exhibitions of the anatomical body have informed cultural imagery of the body. The project as a whole consists of three interrelated (art- and medical) historical subprojects investigating the cultural and academic embedding of the collections.
Ultimately the project allows a deeper understanding of the dynamics of anatomical collections as cultural and academic heritage and seeks to formulate positions on the
relationships between the anatomical museum, popular culture and academic medicine. The vacancies concern two historical projects. Ph.D. project (1) aims at an analysis of how the early modern collections of Leiden University were rooted in ideals of perfection in different fields of knowledge and expertise. Ph.D. project (2) is directed at the historical and educational import of the Leiden University nineteenth-century pathological collections. Tasks:
The writing of two articles (based on Ph.D. chapters) and a Ph.D. dissertation in English
Participation in local research meetings and Ph.D. teaching
Meetings with international experts and presenting papers at (international) conferences
Three months research stay at the Hunter Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London (project 2)
Requirements:
The Ph.D. students should have the following background and competencies:
MA, M.Phil, M.Sc or ‘doctoraal’ in either history, history of science/medicine, art history, cultural studies, museum studies, medicine or an equivalent education
Fluent in English (written as well as spoken)
Working knowledge of Latin (project 1) and Dutch ( project 2)
Ability to work independently
Willingness to cooperate internationally
Interested in doing interdisciplinary research
Conditions of employment
The employment for this position will be fulltime for 4 years and will be under the Ph.D. conditions of the collective work agreement (CAO) of Dutch Universities. The selected candidate will devote approximately 80% of her/his working time to research, and 20% to following courses and to teaching. In view of the latter, the candidate must be willing and able to teach classes and seminars on topics of her/his specialisation. The salary of the Ph.D. candidate is € 2.000,- gross per month in the first year, increasing to € 2.558,- gross per month in the fourth year based on fulltime employment (in accordance with current salary scales as set in the collective work agreement for Dutch Universities) .
