Oregon State University English Language Institute - Tuition Scholarship

The English Language Institute is located in Corvallis, Oregon, a small university town in the western United States. Its 150-200 students per term come from around 40 different countries for small classes taught by English language teaching professionals.

The ELI intensive English program curriculum consists of 18-24 hours per week of reading/writing, listening/speaking, individualized directed learning, grammar, and other elective courses (such as TOEFL preparation) . Our technology-rich Learning Center adds variety to language learning, and the Conversant Program is designed to make sure that students have the opportunity to meet Oregon State University students and local residents who can help them practice their English while learning about American culture.

We are on the quarter system, so Fall, Winter, and Spring terms are approximately 11 weeks each. Summer term is eight weeks, leaving a break to rest, go home, or tour Oregon and the US. See a current list of term dates and costs for more information.

The ELI works with Oregon State University on the Conditional Admissions program. Undergraduate students with TOEFL scores of at least 450 and graduate students with scores of at least 500 can be granted conditional admission to OSU. Full admission is granted to students who achieve 550 on the TOEFL or who successfully complete Level 6 courses at the ELI. For more information about OSU admissions, including deadlines and an application form, see the OSU Admissions page. Take a look at more information about the CAP program on the ELI Admissions page.

ELI students can stay in campus housing or off campus in apartments, co-operative housing, or other housing. For more information about university housing (dormitories and family housing), you can e-mail the OSU Housing Office at UHDS@orst.edu

The ELI also offers Special Programs custom-designed for specific groups. We have a great deal of experience in language and culture, English for Business, and English for Science, as well as other specialized areas.

For teachers, the ELI shares its expertise in educational technology with Summer Technology Workshops. (See our Technology Tip of the Month for a small taste.)

ELI Tuition Scholarship

New students who plan to study full-time in the Intensive English Program can apply for ELI tuition scholarships of up to $1,000 per term. Initial awards are for one term of study but can be renewed for up to two additional terms, based on satisfactory performance. Scholarships are awarded throughout the year.

ELI tuition scholarships are competitive, merit-based awards. Applications are evaluated on the basis of previous academic achievement, record of service, and two personal references. Preference may be given to under-represented countries or regions. Scholarship applicants should submit the following in addition to the normal ELI application.

1.. A cover letter stating that the applicant wishes to apply for a tuition scholarship and including a brief self-description as well as a statement of the applicant's reasons for pursuing English language study.

2.. A transcript (grade record) from the most recent academic institution that the applicant has completed. Normally this means that undergraduate applicants should submit high school transcripts; prospective graduate students should submit undergraduate transcripts. A certified, English language copy is required.

3.. Two letters of recommendation from persons familiar with the applicant. Letters should address the applicant's academic achievements, character and record of service.

Application Deadlines: All materials--a complete ELI application plus the items listed above--should be received at least 45 days before the beginning of the term for which admission is being requested.
