About Grinnell
Grinnell College has been named one of the 20 best liberal arts colleges in the country for the past fifteen years by U.S. News & World Report. Its student body comes from 50 states and 49 other countries, making Grinnell's 130-acre campus a cosmopolitan haven in the heart of the Midwest.
Founded in 1846, the College is located in Grinnell, Iowa, which was named one of the 25 best small towns in America. Innovative from the beginning, Grinnell enjoys a long history of academic and social impacts: The town of Grinnell was a stop along the Underground Railroad, Grinnell College was the first college west of the Mississippi River to grant a bachelor's degree, and one of the first to admit African-Americans and women to full degree programs. In addition, Grinnell was the first college to establish an undergraduate department of political science (1883), create a 3-2 Engineering Program, and fund a travel-service program, which preceded the Peace Corps by many years.
But don't just rely on what we say about Grinnell. In his book entitled Looking Beyond The Ivy League, education expert and writer Loren Pope says this about Grinnell College: No New England or California college is better; few are as good. Indeed, the intellectual adventure at Grinnell is livelier, and the diversity is probably greater since only one sixth of the students come from Iowa. And Yale's The Insider's Guide To The Colleges describes Grinnell as one of the most enlightened, progressive colleges in the Midwest - or the entire country for that matter.
