Two Funded PhD studentships in Architecture (University of Brighton, UK)

The CETLD are pleased to announce two fully funded PhD studentships to start in September 2006. The PhD studentships are being jointly funded by the:

Centre for Excellence in Teaching & Learning through Design (CETLD), and
Higher Education Academy, Art, Design and Media Subject Centre
The CETLD is a Higher Education Funding Council for England funded partnership led by the University of Brighton and including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal College of Art to advance the understanding of learning through design in Higher Education.

For further information see the website: www.brighton.ac.uk/design/cetld

The ADM HEA Subject Centre is part of the Higher Education Academy subject network, established to promote high quality learning and teaching in art, design and media, history of art and history of design in higher education. For further information see the website: www.brighton.ac.uk/admhea.

Two studentships are offered to research aspects of design learning within museums and archival centres. The key focus of both awards will be to articulate and advance pedagogy in these fields. It is anticipated that one of these two studentships will be located in the V&A and examine aspects of innovative personalised learning, new technologies and the use of museum collections. A second studentship will specifically explore innovative means to utilise and develop design and architectural education through archival collections and design/architecturally related artifacts.

These programmes of research will contribute to the knowledge and development of the work of the CETLD and the ADM HEA. The work will contribute to building the scholarship and knowledge capacity in these specialist fields and provide career development opportunities in Higher Education and the use of museum and archival collections.

Prospective candidates will be expected to present an outline statement of their interests and a draft research proposal. Each studentship will cover UK/EU fees and provide a stipend of £12,000 a year for three years. The competition for studentships is open to all appropriately qualified candidates. Applicants will have a good first degree and a postgraduate qualification in an appropriately related field (e.g. architecture, architectural or design history design, museum/curatorial studies, pedagogic or academic practice, elearning).
