Research assistant - Genomic analysis of virulence in pathogenic yeast (School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, Ireland)

This project is part of a study funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). We are investigating the molecular basis of biofilm formation by the pathogenic yeast Candida parapsilosis, which is a major cause of infection in premature babies. We are presently completing the genome sequence of C. parapsilosis in collaboration with the Wellcome Trust Sanger institute. We are also co-ordinating the analysis of the sequences of 5 new Candida genomes, in collaboration with the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT. We have designed and manufactured the first microarrays based on the C. parapsilosis genome, and these are now available for research use.

The applicant will work with other group members to develop methods for knocking out genes in C. parapsilosis, and will also use microarrays in transcriptional profiling experiments.

The position may suit a recent graduae considering registering for a PhD after the first year.
