Applications for Research Studentships are invited by the James Martin Institute for Science and Civilization. The James Martin Institute was established by the James Martin Trust in 2004 at the University of Oxford's Saïd Business School. The mission of the institute is to initiate and conduct research on significant issues related to science, technology and environmental issues that are likely to shape society in the 21st century. To this end, the Martin Institute includes a core faculty, research and associate fellows and MSc and doctoral students in its activities. See
www.martininstitute .ox.ac.uk. The Institute forms is a major part of research in the field of Science and Technology at Oxford's business schooland is currently home to the ESRC Science in Society programme (www.sci-soc. net).

Existing areas of research interest include the social impact of new technologies, science and governance, technology and accountability, technology and inequality, risk and the environment, ethics, evidence, the practices of futuring, e-Science and e-Social Science.

Applicants with experience and/or interests in any area of the social dimensions of science and technology will be considered for an award. Candidates with interests in the following areas are particularly encouraged to apply for an award:

• Intersection between research on the social determinants of health, resilience and development
• Technology, poverty and disasters
• Futures research: scenario thinking and practice
• Rethinking energy security

In all cases applicants should indicate how the proposed area of study contributes to issues in the research literature in science and technology studies and/or science and technology policy. James Martin Research students normally already have some social science or humanities research training (to Masters level) and will register for a University of Oxford DPhil degree at the Business School.
