The UNU Peace and Governance Programme organizes and supports research that deepens understanding of pressing global problems related to peace, security and governance, and produces policy-oriented recommendations. The Programme is also fully involved in the training and capacity-building activities of the UNU. The research work of the Programme falls into four areas: Conflict and Security Studies, Human Rights and Ethics, International Order and Justice, and Policy and Institutional Frameworks. Major Responsibilities: Under the supervision of the Vice-Rector, the Director of Studies will be responsible for the implementation of Peace and Governance Programme activities in one Programme area, either Human Rights and Ethics or Policy and Institutional Frameworks. The Director of Studies will be primarily responsible for
research management. S/he will develop, coordinate, monitor and evaluate academic and research activities as well as publication and dissemination efforts in the Programme area; develop and maintain collaborative links with the UN system and international organizations; represent the University in related conferences and
meetings; formulate project proposals and assess external proposals; secure external funding; plan and organize scientific meetings and workshops; be responsible for drafting and editing scientific reports and articles; and contribute to UNU International Courses and similar teaching and/or training activities.

Qualifications: The Director of Studies requires a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in political science, economics, international law or related discipline, with a focus and proven experience in the area in which the candidate is applying (Human Rights and Ethics or Policy and Institutional Frameworks). You will have sound professional
experience gained in university-level teaching, research and programme development or an equivalent working history with international organisations, scientific or research/training institutions. You will be able to demonstrate ability and practical experience in the development, planning, implementation and evaluation of research and training programmes. You will also have a strong academic publication record. Experience requirements will range from a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience for appointment at P3, through to seven years for appointment at P4. Also essential are knowledge of, and familiarity with, funding sources and ability to raise external funds. Ability to work harmoniously in a multicultural environment is required; in this context, a broad range of contacts within the international community of scholars, especially in developing countries, should be demonstrated. English fluency is essential; working knowledge of other official UN languages is an advantage. Proficiency in the use of standard business software is essential.

Remuneration: Internationally competitive standard UN salary and conditions, including cost of living allowance for Tokyo

Duration of appointment: Two years with the possibility of renewal upon satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
