Postdoctoral Researcher in Optical Transmission Techniques for Optical Networks (Tyndall Institute, Ireland)

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in Photonic Communication System Research. As the overall capacity of optical communications networks grow, the effects of signal degradation in fibre transmission become more critical. A series of alternative modulation formats have been proposed to provide greater tolerance to this degradation, although this places more stringent demands on the required component technologies. Whilst the straight-line transmission characteristics of some of these formats are known, the impact on all-optical networking has yet to be determined.

This project will concern the development and use of novel optical modulation formats, and will develop new cost-reduced approaches to high capacity optical networks.

The successful applicant will join an established team within the Photonic Systems Group, will carry out research in purpose-built photonics systems research facilities at the Tyndall National Institute, and will be involved in collaboration with other groups in Tyndall and elsewhere. Training opportunities will be provided to acquire appropriate and experimental and numerical research skills.

Applicants for this position should have a PhD in Physics, Electronic Engineering or related subject, and would ideally have experience of optical transmission system research. Familiarity with state-of-the-art modulation formats would be considered an advantage. The post is for a period of two years.
