Early Stage Researcher - Effects of pollution on aquatic communities: from water phase via sediment to a benthos-feeding fish

The main objective of this study is to evaluate the transfer of key toxicants and effects caused by this transfer along simplified food chains (e.g. sediment to fish via sediment dwelling organisms) by assessing the internal concentrations and effects on fish using, for example, biomarkers as endpoints. Therefore, a model fish species is exposed to a selected key toxicant via different exposure scenarios whereby transfer (dietary uptake) and effects of the toxicant on growth of the fish is assessed. In a first step, using specific bioaccumulation data of a key toxicant in a freshwater oligochaete, contaminated oligochaetes are produced with a known toxicant burden. In a second step the contaminated oligochaetes are used as a food source in a specific effect study using the selected fish species. Results of these studies can be used for modelling the flux of compounds through trophic levels by applying the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory.
