PhD student: cloud physics and optical particle measurement

The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (IfT) is intensifying its experimental and theoretical research in the fields of cloud physics and the interactions between
aerosol and clouds. In this context we are looking for a PhD student in the fields of cloud physics and optical particle measurement technology.

The position is located at the Leipzig Aerosol and Cloud Interaction Simulator (LACIS) and limited to three years. The salary level is according to German public service regulation (TV-L 13 O/2). Applicants should have a university degree in
physics or meteorology and ideally have a strong background in atmospheric thermodynamics, atmospheric and physical optics, optics of small particles or relevant disciplines. The main task of the successful candidate will be to contribute to the design and prototyping of optical sensors for detection and
characterization of nonspherical particles, and to develop a data analysis algorithm based on the classical and modern scattering theories (Mie theory, T-Matrix, Discrete Dipole Approximation etc.). Though the focus of the project is on experimental work, candidate should be willing to work also on theoretical aspects. A good knowledge of FORTRAN or/and MATLAB programming environment is required. A basic acquaintance with the modern optic design software (ZEMAX) and measurement automation software (LabView) will be most welcome. Fluent English in written and oral form is mandatory.

We are offering the possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team, at one of the most renowned atmospheric research institutes and in one of the most attractive cities in Germany. Female researchers are especially encouraged to apply .
