New Scholarship Initiative for International Students at American University, Washington, D.C.
For first-year undergraduate students applying for the fall 2008 academic year, in addition to the competitive partial scholarships for undergraduate international students from around the world, American University (AU) will be offering a limited number of new generous scholarship initiatives geared specifically to the best and brightest international students who wish to promote AU's philosophy of Ideas, Action, and Service, and who wish to make a difference in today's world.
AU hopes to welcome at least one student from each of the following regions: North Africa and the Middle East, the Caribbean/Central America/Mexico, Africa, Latin America, Europe, South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific, and Eurasia, but the final distribution of scholarship awards will depend on the pool and quality of applicants they receive. All qualified students are welcome to apply.
Award Information
AU is offering a very limited number of scholarships valued at $30,000 per year (guaranteed for all 4 years provided students maintain excellent GPA at AU) to outstanding incoming students from and educated = outside the US. This is not a cash award, but will be applied as credit towards the student's tuition expenses for fall and spring. It does not cover summer classes. Student will be responsible for all costs beyond the $30,000 tuition award each academic year. This award represents almost all of AU's tuition expenses for 2007-2008, leaving the student to pay only a
small difference for tuition, plus room and board, insurance, books, and miscellaneous expenses needed for a nine-month academic year. Overall annual estimated costs for the coming academic year total approximately $46,000, subject to increase in subsequent years. This new initiative is the highest award AU offers to international freshmen.
AU's goal is to identify academic excellence, leadership potential, and students who wish to make a positive difference on the campus, the community, and their countries when they return home.
Application Information:
No separate application is needed. Students will automatically be considered when AU reviews their regular applications.
Deadline for all freshmen applications and all supporting documents: Jan 15, 2008. Earlier submission of complete applications is welcomed.
Students may apply online at no cost or submit paper applications at $45. All supporting documents must be in sealed envelopes (certified copies of originals or originals themselves).
Official translations are needed for all documents not in English. AU will accept true copies and translations done by EducationUSA offices if stamp and signature appear. Official TOEFL scores sent directly from ETS will also be needed.
AU would also appreciate a cover letter from the EducationUSA advising center for these scholarship applicants (thoughts on why this student would be a good academic 'fit' for AU, was/is this student a YES scholarship student? Seeds of Peace? Model UN? Community service? Diana Kamal Scholarship nominee? Outstanding leadership? Volunteer? Other?) In addition, latest information on educational system of the student's home country as well as the school from which the candidates are coming (School profile - how easy or difficult it is to be admitted to a certain high
school, etc), would also be appreciated.
Basic Eligibility Requirements:
* Complete application including test scores and supporting documents no later than Jan 15. (On-line applications - no application fee!)
* Academic excellence in secondary school (preferred GPA equivalent of 3.9) in a challenging high school curriculum
* 2 letters of recommendation from teachers, counselors, principal.
* Well written essay
* Demonstrated leadership, community service and volunteerism that match AU's philosophy of turning "Ideas into Action, and Action into Service"
* Students who are ready to join the volunteer leadership team of AU Diplomats and who will be wonderful ambassadors for their countries at AU.
* Students who wish to work in collaboration with others for constructive outcomes
* Proof of English proficiency: MINIMUM TOEFL scores of 550 PBT, 213 CBT, 80 IBT, 6.5 IELTS. (NB: students attending secondary school outside US for a minimum of 10, 11 and 12 grades where English is the medium of instruction do NOT have to take these tests. A phone interview may be recommended instead.)
* NO SAT is required for students attending secondary schools outside the US!
* A 'personal' DVC interview may be required. If EducationUSA centers have internet IP facilities, AU would be happy to initiate the DVC.
* Must provide proof of financial resources for at least $16,000/ per year (if student does not receive the $30,000 scholarship, he/she will be required to demonstrate a higher amount.)
* US citizens, dual citizens, and permanent residents of the US are NOT eligible to apply
