1.Position vacant – Research Scientist – Agroecologist, Cropping Systems Agronomist

The team of the department of Agroecology of the Institute of Plant Production and Agroecology of the Tropics and Subtropics is seeking a highly motivated scientist to initiate innovative field and greenhouse based systems research that leads to understanding the impact of land-use change on species, biodiversity and related ecosystem functions and – services. The person will also contribute to develop
agricultural systems that enhances profitability whilst maximizing efficiency of resource use, and minimizing environmental impacts. The appointee will be responsible for planning, conducting, analysing and publishing research.

This position involves close co-operation with scientists of the Institute. A PhD in agronomy/ biology or related discipline with knowledge of tropical/subtropica l
cropping systems is required.

Main Responsibilities

- Initiate innovative and targeted field/greenhouse based research leading to improvements in land-use planning and crop management that enhances/maintains biodiversity/ ecosystem services.
- Collaborate and liaise with other scientists involved in tropical crop management and land-use planning research.
- Raise additional funding to set up an own working group.
- Teach and supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students.
- Communicate results to the public and international science community through publications and conferences.
- Perform other duties as required.

Selection Criteria

- Preparedness to participate in field-/greenhouse work and to travel abroad.
- Demonstrate good English and German communication skills (both written and verbal) and be able to maintain collaborate relationship with external researcher.
- Proven ability to publish results of research.
- Experience to initiate, plan, organize and conduct innovative systems research.
- Demonstrated ability in data management and statistical analysis of data.
- Ability to work independently and to manage a research project and show effective team leadership.

Doctoral Student Position for Agricultural Economists or Economists

The Department of Agricultural Economics and Social Sciences in the Tropics and
Subtropics, Chair of Rural Development Theory and Policy (Prof. Dr. M. Zeller), University of Hohenheim, has an opening for a doctoral student position to work in a
research project.

The research project is implemented in cooperation with the International Food Policy
Research Institute (IFPRI) in Washington, D.C. The position is for 2,5 to 3 years subject to funding, with a starting date in April 2008 (or somewhat later). The
research will be carried out on contract agriculture in the small farm sector, using
experimental research designs to analyze the performance of alternative contractual arrangements. The country of study will be either in East Africa or Southeast Asia.

Successful candidates should have an outstanding Master´s degree (or equivalent) in
agricultural economics, economics or related discipline, experience with quantitative
economic techniques, proven interest in rural development policy issues, excellent command of the English language (preferably also German), and very good computer skills. Proficiency in other languages, work experience in developing countries, and
teaching experience, are welcome additional qualifications.
