International Conference: Varieties of Pragmatism. Classical Tradition and Contemporary Developments (Babes-Bolyai University, Cluj, Romania)

Dear Colleagues,

Two years ago Babes-Bolyai University launched a program of annual conferences dedicated to pragmatic philosophy. In 2006 and 2007 various scholars from both Europe and America participated in the conferences, contributing to the understanding of pragmatic philosophy in various aspects ranging form the religious premises of Pragmatism to the place of metaphysics within a pragmatic philosophy.

By this letter The Faculty of European Studies of Babes-Bolyai University announces the call for papers for the third international conference on pragmatic philosophy:

Pragmatism is not a philosophy of the past centuries: It is obviously not a dead philosophical tradition, but a living one, of significant impact throughout various fields of philosophical inquiry. Likewise, Pragmatism changed over time, and continues to do so.

Just as the initial pragmatic doctrines were diverse we see today that various philosophical outlooks claim an equal legitimacy in appropriating for themselves the label of “Pragmatism”.

The conference purports to focus on the investigation of the relationship between classical pragmatism and the contemporary varieties of it, on the legitimacy of using the label “pragmatic” for various contemporary philosophies, as well as on assessing the future prospects for a philosophy of a broadly pragmatic orientation.
