Doctoral Research Studentship in Disc Regeneration
Network of Excellence for Functional Biomaterials, NUI Galway
Deadline: 31/03/09
Description:
A Postgraduate Research Studentship (PhD) will be available starting in June 2009. The position is designed for investigative work in developing injectable scaffolds for the repair of damaged intervertebral discs (IVD´s). The successful candidate will become part of a collaborative research program focusing on the development of a minimally- invasive route to surgical implantation of the IVD tissue engineering constructs. The candidate will gain experience in functionalisation of polymer scaffold systems with peptide gradients leading to a decorated polymer scaffold
system which will result in controlled angiogenesis within the implanted material.
Qualifications:
The ideal candidate would have a Bachelor´s degree in chemistry, biotechnology, polymer engineering, biomedical engineering or related sciences. A first class honours track record is essential. Preference will be given to candidates who have a Masters degree.

NFB´s research programme focuses on the design of biomaterials by developing innovative structures with functionality for targeted preclinical applications. The output of the network will lead to innovative therapeutic strategies for application to a wide variety of human diseases. This new generation of biomaterials will incorporate developments such as targeted delivery of genes for the treatment of genetic diseases, the development of multi-biomolecular delivery platforms from responsive biomaterials for thrombosis, restenosis, nucleus pulposus regeneration, healing of soft tissue defects and site-specific delivery of therapeutic molecules through the synthesis of nano-structures capable of homing in on the targeted site.
