In collaboration with
C.C.D. ORADEA

We would like to invite you to the National Conference on

Education and social change
Oradea, 20-21 February 2009

Argument: The changes that occurred in post communist Romania had a strong impact on all areas related to education: the family, the educational system, and the media. The social context in which students, parents and teachers are working was a subject to significant changes. On the other hand, education itself is a factor that influences these changes. Our conference aims to explore the mutual relationship between school and its social context.

This conference brings together contributions circumscribed to theoretical and empirical domains such as sociology of education and adolescence, psychology of education, educational policies, educational studies, and philosophy of education. Theorists and practitioners in the fields mentioned above are expected to present papers and participate

Sections:

1. Education and social inclusion. Coordinator: Adrian Hatos
Social sciences are concerned by the complex relationships among educational processes, the social and economic context of education and the social destinations of individuals in the conditions of the emergence of a vast category of permanently socially excluded individuals. The signs of precarious competitiveness of Romanian schools renders even more necessary such a discussion in our country. The section you are being invited to will gather papers on issues connected to these debates such as: tendencies in social and educational mobility, social and institutional factors of school achievement and status attainment, educational influences in configuring school participation.
Note: The language of section #1 would be English.

2. The social impact of changes in the contemporary family. Coordinator: Floare Chipea
This section is concerned with the changes in the contemporary family as an answer to recent social phenomenon (rising unemployment and work migration, rise in divorce rates, and cultural change) and their influence on the socialization of children, on the marital couple, on the equality of chances between women and men, and on the economic role of the family. We will focus especially on the analysis of the causes that induced those changes and the models of intervention in this respect.

3. Risks and opportunities in adolescence. Coordinator: Sergiu Bălţătescu
The social and cultural change exposed the Romanian adolescents to new risks or potentiated the existing ones. Drugs and alcohol usage, unprotected sexual relationship and teenage pregnancy, exposure to violence and social exclusion, are only some of these risks. At the same time, it offered new opportunities such as the cultural consumption, participation in the civic and political structures, the study and work abroad. We will host presentations that will focus on the behaviors, identities and lifestyles of adolescents in the context of social change.

4. Social services in the educational sector. Coordinator: Ionuţ Oprea
The recent social changes imposed a multicultural intervention in the educational sector. The necessity of social work in school is not a new issue. This section intend to find answers to the issue of the role that social worker should have in school, and in the identification of social needs in the educational sector. How can the social worker to be involved in elaboration and promotion of social services addressed to the school population, what social services are necessary in school and how these could be implemented, are only some of the questions to which we expect answers.

5. The role of education in children’s/student’s development and knowledge. Coordinator: Cecilia Sas
This section will present and discuss papers with topics such as differentiating the didactic activity, individualized recovery programs and learning programs adapted to different styles and learning skills, academic achievements, student and/or parent counseling, the necessity and possibility of knowing the child’s/student’s personality, the relationship between theory – as a method in psycho-pedagogic knowledge, the class/group management – as a result of psycho-pedagogic knowledge, investigating the educational phenomena.

6. The recovery and educational inclusion of children with special educational needs. Coordinator: Ioan Chelemen
This section will host papers with theoretical and empirical aspects regarding the issue of identifying the community member attitudes in regards with integration of children with special educational needs, design of adapted curriculum according to the specificity of different types of disabilities, innovation in recovery programs/ compensation of children with disabilities, identifying the causes, factors and consequences of difficulties and psycho- pedagogic problems of children with disabilities and children in difficulty, communitarian education, family counseling, vocational and educational counseling, innovating the curriculum of professional training of specialists in special psycho-pedagogy.

7. Communication and education: the challenges of a new paradigm. Coordinator: Ionel Cioară
This section aims at approaching the theoretical-abstract dimensions of education through the looking glass of the communication phenomenon, revealing everything of what “philosophy of education” means and the relation between it and the theories of communication. The themes proposed for research are subjects which tend to become classic in the last few years as, for example: education in the informational society, postmodern theories on education, communication in the process of education, the hermeneutics and phenomenology of education, ethical implications of communication within the educational environment, cybernetics and education etc.
