Two PhD Studentships -- Jihad Rhetoric in Scholastic and Popular
Discourse and Violence and Messianism in Islamic Thought

Applications are invited for two PhD studentships in the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies, School of Humanities and Social Sciences. Each will be for a three year period starting on 1 January 2010, or as soon as possible after that date.. The studentships cover both tuition fees and maintenance grants at standard ESRC/AHRC rates. For 2009 this will cover the Exeter Home/EU tuition fees and a maintenance stipend of approximately £13,000 per annum.

Studentship Description:
The two studentships will form part of Professor Gleave's Fellowship, "Legitimate and Illegitimate Violence in Islamic Thought", funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) as part of the Research Councils UK's Global Uncertainties Programme.

Professor Gleave's Fellowship consists of three linked but separate research themes:
* 1) Violence, the State and the Individual
* 2) Jihad Rhetoric in Scholastic and Popular Discourse
* 3) Violence and Messianism

These projects will run concurrently with appropriate postdoctoral research fellows and PhD students, working collaboratively with Professor Gleave as well as independently on their own linked research.. Each of the two PhD studentships advertised will be linked to the projects: "Jihad Rhetoric in Scholastic and Popular Discourse" and "Violence and Messianism".

Applicants should submit an online application for a PhD in Arab & Islamic Studies, submitting all the relevant documents and references, including a research proposal (of approximately two sides of A4) by Friday 30 October 2009.

The research proposal must address how the applicant's proposed research fits with both the fellowship generally and the specific research theme with which they wish to be attached. Guidelines on constructing a proposal are available.
