BOLL STIFTUNG Scholarships for Social Scientists in the South Caucas

A competition announcement for regional scholarship programme 2007
for social scientists

Goals of the regional scholarship programme:

The scholarship programme fosters scientific research specifically in the South Caucasus. The programme aims to:

- support young researchers to conduct individual and interdisciplinary scientific research in the framework of regional cooperation thus supporting the development of social sciences;

- sustain the development of a South Caucasian network of highly qualified professionals.

Selection Criteria:
Applicants born 1973-1984, who have completed an institute of higher education and who permanently reside in the South Caucasus, can apply. Good knowledge of two foreign languages (Russian and one Western European) is a must. Methodologically innovative works that comprise oral history, sociological research methods and comparative studies will be given particular priority.

The Foundation finances researches in the frameworks of the following directions:
1. History of everyday life
2. State and religion in the 20th century/the role of religion in present-day life
3. History of opposition against the Soviet regime in the republics of the South Caucasus in the 1920-1950s
4. New vision of old conflicts
5. Ethnicity
6. Migration issues
7. Refugees in the city: strategies for survival, community building
8. The "own" and "other" in society
9. Problems of inequality and discrimination
10. Tradition and Western values
11. Informal power structures
12. Transformation of gender roles
13. Political status of women and women's political leadership
14. Urban culture
15. Communication in the city
16. Sustainable city development (social, ecologic and economic aspects)
17. Contemporary methods of municipal governance
18. Social and technical infrastructure of the city
19. Problems of city development
20. Architecture and power

Duration and payment
The scholarship period comprises 12 months: 01/01/07 – 31/12/07, with a monthly stipend that equals 200 Euro. Additional expenses for seminars, summer schools, publications, etc., may be granted.

General guidelines:

- The scholarship is considered to be a personal financial assistance and cannot be used for projects other than envisaged by the programme.

- Applicants do not necessarily need to be affiliated to a scientific institution or have a scientific degree.

- Deadline for applications is 20 October 2006, 12 am.

Application Documents:

1. Letterhead with the following information: name and last name; date of birth; country; scientific direction; title of the proposed work;
2. Application form (www.boell.ge) ;
3. Curriculum Vitae;
4. Essay (3-5 pages) which should reflect your professional and personal motivation (Why am I interested in this topic? / What do I know about the proposed topic? / What methods will I use to research this topic? / Annual work schedule, etc.);

5. Two recommendation letters from an academic institution or from an immediate supervisor you have worked with (indicating relevant experience and/or scientific work);

6. Certificate of higher education (B.A., M.A. or 5-year diploma) with transcripts;

7. List of publications, including copies (only up to 20 pages), where applicable

All the above-mentioned documents must be presented in Russian (except for copies of research papers) in 3 copies. Incomplete or belated application packages will not be considered.
