2007 Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) - the Oxford Internet

We are delighted to announce that the fifth Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) will be conducted and organised by the Oxford Internet Institute in partnership with The Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. Moving from Oxford for the second time, it will be held in the US at the Berkman Center (Cambridge, MA) from July 16-27, 2007.

Thirty places are available, open to students from any discipline who are currently undertaking doctoral research on social, political, legal and economic issues relating to the Internet. Preference will be given to students at an advanced stage of their doctorate, who have embarked on writing their thesis, and who are working in a research area that corresponds to one of the OII's research priorities or the Berkman's research priorities.

Academic Programme Although details of the teaching programme have yet to be finalised, the SDP 2007 programme will leverage the unique opportunities offered by its alternative setting, while retaining a similar approach to past years. Leading academics including OII Faculty and Berkman Faculty and Fellows will conduct daily research seminars, talks and panel sessions. Students will both present their research and offer feedback to their peers, and there will also be scope for break-out sessions where groups can focus more narrowly on research questions of mutual interest.

The Programme will facilitate deep discussion of substantive theoretical, methodological and policy issues, and will be designed to help students to better frame their research questions, adopt the most appropriate methodological approaches, and improve the structure of their theses. Drawing on the particular expertise of attending faculty, it will also seek to generate dialogue and debate between students from different disciplinary backgrounds on key themes, offering a genuinely multi-disciplinary perspective.

Information about tutors and the academic timetable will be provided as they are confirmed. See previous years: SDP2006, SDP2005, SDP2004, SDP2003.

Completed applications must be received by the OII no later than 5pm GMT on Monday, February 12th, 2007. Successful applicants will be notified by March 23rd, 2007.
We will endeavour to acknowledge receipt of all applications, although this may take longer if submitted close to the deadline.

Location, tuition fees and bursaries All seminars and lectures will take place at The Berkman Center for Internet and Society at Harvard Law School. Optional accommodation will be in single dorms on the Harvard Law School campus, situated just across the road from where the teaching will take place. The cost of the course is $2400, which covers accommodation from the 15th until the 27th July inclusive, and all course tuition fees. Tuition for participants arranging their own lodging will be $1800. Please note that travel to and from Harvard is not included in this fee. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on week days, as will some course dinners and social events.

Students frequently receive some financial support from their home departments. However, a very limited number of Summer Doctoral Programme bursaries (scholarships) will be available to help support students who could not otherwise afford to attend. Further details of these will be made available soon. Please note that students do not need to make a request for a bursary at the application stage as this will be dealt with once the selection process has been completed.
