This PhD project will be centred on evaluating the effects of perturbations on stream fish assemblages and populations focusing on the potential effects of climatic (e.g. temperature, hydrology) and anthropogenic (chemical contaminants) modifications on stream fish life-history traits. The first step of the project will be focused on the study of spatial and temporal dynamics of stream fish assemblages. The second step will be focused on target species and to perform field experiments to evaluate fish population responses along a gradient of chemical perturbations. This step will allow developing laboratory experiments (e.g. mesocosms) to validate hypotheses concerning the relative effects on both temperature and key-toxicants.
Formation requirements: Degree in Biology. The position requires a basic knowledge in fish ecology, together with basic skills in ecotoxicology and statistics. Practical skills in the work with fish, both in the field and in the lab, will be helpful. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, with interest in collaborative research.
