PhD Scholarship sponsored by Airbus UK
Optical Shape Measurement Technology For Aerospace Applications
Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering
Up to £10,500 per annum tax free plus tuition fees
Ref: JMH160107
Recent developments at Loughborough University in optical shape measurement technology now allow millions of 3-D coordinates to be measured from the surface of a component in just a few seconds.
This project aims to extend both the range of applicability and the accuracy of optical shape measurement systems (SMS) for structural testing and manufacturing applications within the aerospace industry. Specific problems that will be addressed include:
development of robust optimisation techniques to match the measured clouds of points to Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models for automated quality control, incorporation of optical modelling software to allow robust measurement of both shiny and matte surfaces, use on as-manufactured metallic components in an industrial environment, application of the system to measurements of structural components in a variety of different testing environments.
The ideal candidate will hold, or be expecting, a 1st class or 2:1 honours degree in an engineering, mathematical or physical science subject. Strong numerical analysis skills, proven ability to undertake experimental projects, and proficiency in at least one computer programming language, preferably C++ or MATLAB, are also required. Both EU and non-EU citizens are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
For informal enquiries please contact Professor J M Huntley, Loughborough University (J.M.Huntley@ lboro.ac. uk) or Dr Richard Burguete, Airbus UK (Richard.Burguete@ airbus.com).
An application form and further details are available from Ms Jo Mason, Research Administrator (J.R.Mason@lboro. ac.uk). Please quote the reference JMH160107 on your initial enquiry to Ms Mason and on the application form.
The closing date for applications is 20th February 2007.
