PhD position in computer simulation of thin polymer film - Technische Universiteit Eindhoven

Immediate opening for a PhD position in computer simulation of thin polymer film
Technische Universiteit Eindhoven Department of Applied Physics Eindhoven, (Noord-Brabant) , 40 hours per week

Job description

Friction and adhesion between surfaces play an increasingly important role in a wide range of technological applications, including gears, packaging, barriers, membranes, sensors, and medical implants. Despite intensive research spanning many decades, the molecular origins of friction remain unclear. Often polymers are employed for minimising wear and friction between solid surfaces, simply by grafting the right type of polymers to them. The PhD candidate will perform molecular-dynamics computer simulations of thin polymer layers made of three generic model polymers: linear and cross-linked polyethylene and amorphous atactic polystyrene, in a melt and glassy (or semicrystalline) state. The supporting substrates will be
structureless or will be represented by crystalline lattices. The aim of this project is to address this problem by a combination of cyclic shear experiments in the plastic regime and direct atomistic computer simulations of sheared polymer films on the nanoscale. Requirements Required education/skills: University Graduate

Candidates should have an interest in statistical physics or thermodynamics and hold a Master's degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or equivalent, and have a strong affinity towards collaboration with experimentalists and engineers from industry.
