Job description A new class of light sensitive proteins that promises to become a rich study ground for understanding signal transduction has recently been discovered. The aim of the project is to model the cascade of events, starting with the electronic excitation and continuing with the chemical changes and rearrangements in the protein exterior that lead to the signalling state and interaction with other output domains. This project for two versatile PhD students will involve, for example, quantum chemical calculations, Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics, QM/MM methods, coarse grained and multiscale dynamics, metadynamics and path sampling techniques. The students will work in close collaboration with two experimental groups in Amsterdam. The research will be carried out in the group of Dr Bernd Ensing.
Requirements Required education/skills: University Graduate Applicants must hold a Master's in Chemistry, Physics or a related field, have excellent communication skills and be highly motivated to conduct fundamental scientific research.

Conditions of employment Employment basis: Temporary for specified period Duration of the contract: four years (one year plus a further three years after a positive evaluation)

Additional conditions of employment:
The appointments will be on a temporary basis for a maximum period of four years (one year plus a further three years after a positive evaluation) and should lead to a dissertations (PhD theses). An educational plan that includes the attendance of courses and national and international meetings will be drafted. The PhD students will be expected to assist with teaching. Based on a full-time appointment (38
hours per week), the gross monthly salary will range from €1956 in the first year to €2502 in the final year, according to the Dutch salary scales for PhD students. Assistance with accommodation can be provided.
