PhD Student Anaerobic Microbiology, Leipzig, Germany

In a newly established research group at the Department of Isotope Biogeochemistry at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research in Leipzig, funded by the European Research Council (ERC) we offer a position as

PhD Student (m/f) in the field of anaerobic microbiology / biochemistry (code-digit 97/2009)

to commence at the earliest date. The appointment is for 3 years at the Helmholtz Centre in Leipzig. Initial work will be done in our branch at the TU Berlin. Later, the work will be continued at the Helmholtz Centre in Leipzig.

Topic of our research is the microbiology and biochemistry of anaerobic bacteria in a specific sub cluster of the Chloroflexi. These bacteria are involved in the biodegradation of many toxic compounds but also appear to constitute a major population in marine and terrestrial sediments. The goal of our research is to describe the ecological role and the biochemical / biotechnological potential of
these bacteria. Here, we look for a PhD student who explores marine sediments and enrichment cultures by biochemical means. Target molecules will be fatty acids, proteins and their activities, RNA and DNA.

Our group offers modern facilities with state of the art equipment and is embedded in a vivid and highly international research environment.

The successful candidate is expected to hold a degree (Diploma/Master) in Biology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Marine Biology, or similar with sound knowledge in biochemistry, microbiology, and genetics. Applicants need good oral and written communication skills in English. The successful candidate should have strong motivation, flexibility, detail-orientation and willingness to work in cooperation.
