Marie Curie Early Stage (PhD) Researcher in Sociology (University of Helsinki, Finland)

We are seeking to appoint an Early Stage (PhD) Social Researcher from November 2006 to join an active research team studying sociology of sleep, in association with the Centre for Research on Ageing and Gender (CRAG). The post is for 28 months and is for an Early Stage Researcher (with a maximum of 4 years research experience), who would have the opportunity to register for a doctorate. The post will involve qualitative research on the negotiation of sleep and sleeping arrangements among couples at different life course stages, and/or the patterns of sleep of divorced and widowed women and men.

The aim of this EU funded research program is to identify factors (sociological, behavioural and physiological) that cause sleep loss and clarify the social and physiological consequences of sleep loss. The program will provide the researchers with skills in various areas of sleep research, including sociological and experimental sleep research. The Marie Curie Training Research Network consists of six multidisciplinary groups, situated in Helsinki, Surrey, Brussels, Munich and Zurich. Altogether 11 early stage and 6 experienced researcher positions are available in the program over the next 4 years. See www.sleep.fi for more information about the research program. Applicants should have a first degree or a Masters degree/professional qualification in sociology or another social science, and should have a good command of written and spoken English.

Salary is approximately ?26,000per annum plus mobility, transport and career allowances (as defined by the Marie Curie programme). According to the eligibility criteria of the Marie Curie programme, applicants must be nationals of a State other than the UK (the country of the host organisation, University of Surrey). In addition, at the start of the activity, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in the UK for more than 12 months in the preceding 3 years.
