PhD Vacancies in Transnational European History

PhD Vacancies in Transnational European History in three areas: infrastructures, consumption, tourism and mobility The Foundation for the History of Technology sponsored by the Technical University Eindhoven, Department Technology Management and in partnership with Charles University, Prague (CZ) and the University of Plovdiv (BG), is inviting applications for four to five PhD positions for students from the Central, Eastern and Southeastern European countries of the former Soviet Bloc. The objective is to incorporate research from those regions into larger, ongoing research projects focused on transnational European history, in particular the role of technology in constructing European society and culture.

The general areas of research are:
(a) Infrastructures (two positions),
(b) Consumption (two positions), and
(c) Tourism and mobility (1 position).
Successful candidates will be fully supported for four years and complete the PhD degree at the Technical University in Eindhoven, with nostrification in Prague or Plovdiv.

Requirements

Successful candidates will have a keen interest in understanding technology in society and culture from a historical perspective;

They will be fluent in English;

They will have excellent reading skills in at least one of the languages of the region;

They are willing and able to study in Eindhoven and Prague or Plovdiv;

They will hold an MA equivalent to the Dutch MA degree in history or in a related field (sociology; cultural studies; science, technology & innovation; history of economics; economics of technical change, etc.);

They will be interested in working in collaborative, multi-disciplinary and cross-national teams. They will contribute to the work of the Tensions of Europe Network.

Please include with your curriculum vitae a copy of your Master thesis, a copy of your B.A. Diploma or B.A. thesis and a letter of interest including information about motivation, language skills, preferred project, and the preferred partner institution where you would like to study.

The selection procedure will include a visit to Eindhoven. Costs will be fully covered. Selections will be made during the fall of 2006, and the program will begin not later than January 1 with six months of training at the Technical University of Eindhoven.
