Postgraduate Research Position - UWB Navigation, University Erlangen-Nuremberg

TYPE OF NEWS: Job vacancies
STATUS: News (official)
TITLE: Vacancy: Postgraduate Research Position - UWB Navigation
ABSTRACT: UWB (ultrawide band) signals are particularly suited for positioning and imaging of indoor environments. For UWB based navigation of autonomous systems, methods and algorithms for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) as well as procedures for the reconstruction of floor plans shall be developed.

At the Chair of Information Technologies, Friedrich-Alexander -University Erlangen-Nuremberg, a postgraduate research position is open in the project CoLOR of the priority programme UKoLoS, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Responsibilities:

After an orientation phase you will be responsible for:
* Development of algorithms for the detection, extraction and tracking of characteristic, non-moving features for map building from UWB measurements.
* Sensor fusion in support of an inertial navigation system by the maps and extracted features
* Built-up of a simulation environment for algorithm evaluation.

Qualifications

We expect:
* An outstanding MSc. degree in Electrical Engineering, Radio and Measurement Technology, Communications or Physics
* An in depth understanding of digital signal processing. Some know-how of wave propagation and radar imaging will be particularly helpful.
* Programming experience with MATLAB
* Creativity and an inclination to enjoy working and contributing to a multinational team
* Ambition and ability to publish scientific work at international conferences and in journals

Environment

You will find:
* A young, dynamic team, with a focus on developing and implementing innovative navigation solutions
* Cooperation with our project partners at the Ilmenau University of Technology, University Duisburg-Essen and the University Karlsruhe
* A DFG research project, currently limited to 2 years, with an option to apply for funding of a third year to implement and evaluate the sensor fusion algorithms by measurements.
* Support of your scientific ambitions, e.g. to earn a PhD.

Excellent candidates are encouraged to submit their applications which should include a cover letter, a brief statement of research interests, your curriculum vitae, certificates and preferably a list of references or reference letters. Please direct your application to Lehrstuhl für Informationstechnik mit dem Schwerpunkt Kommunikationselekt ronik, Am Wolfsmantel 33, D-91058 Erlangen, Germany.

Deadline for submission: September 30, 2006.
