Postdoc - Stem Cell Therapy for Retinal Disease, University College London, UK

Applications are invited for an MRC funded position within the Genetics Research Department, UCL Institute of Ophthalmology to develop stem cell therapy for retinal disease. The successful applicant will join a lively research group with an excellent track record in pre-clinical development in cell and gene therapies and in translational research (see http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ioo/research/ali.htm).

We have recently demonstrated that cell transplantation is a viable strategy in the treatment of photoreceptor degeneration (MacLaren et al., Nature, 2006) and defined the optimal ontogenetic stage for successful rod photoreceptor transplantation. We are now investigating strategies to generate photoreceptor cells from a variety of stem cells (adult, embryonic and IPS). The project will involve cell culture, use of viral vectors, immunohistochemistry and a variety of in vivo assessments.

For this post a background in stem biology is essential and the applicant must hold a degree and PhD in a relevant subject area. The post is funded until June 2011. The salary will be based on qualifications and previous experience and will be graded either as UCL Grade 7 (in the range GBP 27,466 33,780 pa) or Grade 8 (in the range GBP 34,793 - 41,545 pa) plus London Allowance of GBP 2,649 pa.
