Postdoctoral Researcher, Belgium

The University of Antwerp is a knowledge centre with 3.400 co-workers that performs ground-breaking and innovative research of international standing. The university takes special care to ensure optimum support and supervision of students, and pays constant attention to educational innovation. The university is an autonomous pluralistic institution that is committed to the enhancement of an open, democratic and multicultural society, and it pursues an equal opportunities policy.

The VIB - Department of Molecular Genetics is affiliated with the University of Antwerp and is one of eight departments of the Flanders Institute for Biotechnology (VIB) (http://www.vib.be/VIB/EN/). More than 80 researchers are working in four groups active in the research of complex neurological diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system of man (http://www.molgen.ua.ac.be/). In addition there is a centralized genetic service facility providing high-throughput genetic and cellular analyses.

The Peripheral Neuropathy Group within the VIB - Department of Molecular Genetics is looking for a

Postdoctoral Researcher

to support their research.

Job description

We have contributed to the identification of genes responsible for various types of inherited peripheral neuropathies. The identification of genes and disease-associated mutations is the first step in understanding the pathomechanisms, and opens new perspectives for molecular genetic diagnosis and therapy. Genotype/phenotype correlations guide the selection of specific mutations suitable for functional analysis in cellular systems and model organisms. One of our projects aims to study a the effect of mutations in a gene that we recently identified for Charcot-Marie-Tooth neuropathy. The postdoc will apply molecular genetic and cell biology tools to study specific mutations. We offer an excellent multidisciplinary team-oriented research environment involving clinicians, geneticists, molecular biologists and bio-informaticians.

Profile

The candidate should be holder of a PhD, MD or both degrees, self-motivated and highly creative.

The applicant is expected to have a strong interest in neurodegeneration, neurosciences, molecular cell biology and small model organisms.

Necessary skills: laboratory experience, team player with a sense of initiative and responsibility, well-organized and mobile.

Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, the ability to obtain independent funding and at least one accepted first-author publication in an international peer-reviewed journal are required.
