3-Year PhD Scholarships
Global Centre for Mega Projects in Transport and Development, A VREF Centre of Excellence in Future Urban Transport Bartlett School of Planning, Bartlett Faculty of The Built Environment University College London

The Bartlett School of Planning (BSP) is a research-led planning school with an international reputation offering innovative planning and built environment teaching
and research programmes. BSP has recently been awarded a five year grant by the
Volvo Research and Educational Foundations (VREF) to establish an international centre of excellence to undertake comparative research in decision-making in the planning, appraisal and evaluation of mega urban transport projects and their impacts. The research programme will be undertaken in collaboration with nine other university partners in the developed world in Europe, Australasia and North America. The Centre - The Global Centre for Mega Projects in Transport and Development (The OMEGA Centre) - will be under the direction of Professor Harry T. Dimitriou.

The research programme will be formally launched on 1st October 2006.

The Director wishes to award up to three PhD scholarships as from 1st October 2006. Funding is available for 3 years to study under the supervision of Professor Dimitriou on aspects of the Centre's research programme. Applications from candidates with particular interest in the following areas will be especially welcomed:

* Comparative international analysis of mega urban transport project performance, their impacts on sustainable and territorial development and institutional and
planning frameworks.
* The treatment of risk, uncertainty and complexity in decision-making and planning applied to the field of mega urban transport projects and their impacts.
* IT and GIS/visualisation of mega urban transport characteristics and impacts together with their territorial and institutional settings.
* The application of unstructured 'story telling' methods of data collection and subsequent narrative pattern analysis techniques in complex decision-making
environments, in the planning and transport infrastructure field.
