New publication: Hidden Europe

It¹s a while since the travel and culture magazine, hidden europe, had a mention here, but they still seem to giving the Balkans a good bit of coverage. With a good web site at http://www.hiddeneurope.co.uk, a regular free electronic newsletter and their print magazine, hidden europe covers a lot of material on people, culture, language and society that gets overlooked by the regular media. In May, they had a feature on Macedonian villages (contributed by Chris Deliso of Balkanalysis), and an unusual feature on an outpost of the Swedish diaspora on the Dnepr river just
upstream from the river¹s Black Sea delta. And a long article on Kosovo railways, which picked up some familiar BAN themes diasporas, migrant workers, etc.

The latest issue of hidden europe, dated July 2006, has a real east Adriatic focus, with an article on Istria (which includes something on the Istro-Romanian community), and, by way of welcoming Montenegro to the new political map of Europe, a review of some of the curious political entities of yesteryear in the Dalmatian region: the Ragusan Republic, the Republic of Poljica, and former Italian exclaves at Sazani, Lastovo, etc. The full table of contents can be seen online (with some articles available in full text format as pdf files) at:
