International School of Economics

Overview

The International School of Economics based at Tbilisi State University (ISET)—a regional “center of excellence” modeled after similar centers supported by the World Bank and other international sponsors in Prague, Budapest, Moscow, and Kiev—will provide high-quality graduate instruction in economics, comparable in content and quality to master’s programs in North America and Western Europe. ISET will open
its doors in Fall 2006 as an autonomous graduate school based at Tbilisi State University, serving the entire South Caucasus region. The School will offer:

a two-year Master's Program in Economics adhering to international academic standards and taught in English by an international faculty, an affiliated research center, and a regional outreach program for building capacity for teaching and analysis in other universities, government agencies and think tanks in the South
Caucasus.

ISET recruits students from all parts of Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. An undergraduate diploma from an accredited institution of higher education is
required for admission. Admission decisions are based on a review of the application materials, the results of written examinations in English, mathematics and
economics principles, and an interview in English with members of the ISET faculty or International Advisory Board. Although an undergraduate degree in Economics
is not required, basic knowledge of economic theory and principles is essential for success in the admissions process..

The School’s graduates will be prepared to work as economists in their home country in policy-related professional positions in government, think tanks, international organizations and the private sector, or to enter Ph.D. programs in universities in North America and Western Europe.

ISET receives major financial support from a group of local and international sponsors, including the Government of Georgia, the World Bank, the Swedish
International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), BP, and the Open Society Institute.

Students who receive a stipend in their first year may be asked to perform occasional tasks at ISET, such as translation of course syllabi or portions of the
School’s website into their native language. Second-year students may be required to perform ISET-related work (up to 12 hours per week) in order to continue receiving a stipend. Students may, for example, be required to assist a professor with a
first-year course, take part in a research project, work as an intern in a government agency or other organization involved in economic policy research,
work in the computer laboratory, help organize a conference, etc.

Admissions

To receive full consideration, your application and supporting materials must be received by July 15, 2006. After a screening of applications, ISET will invite applicants to take part in admission exams and interviews in Baku, Tbilisi, and Yerevan. Students admitted to the ISET Master’s Program will be notified by August 4. ISET will conduct a second round of admissions in August if and only if space is
available.
