Theme
There is little doubt that in the 21st century our understanding of ourselves and our surroundings are overtly and covertly shaped by the media. But what determines the form and content of media remains an open and important question. Is media content shaped by ownership? By the state and its policies? Or by the more abiding features of cultures and societies? In an era of global broadcast, on the one hand, and the capacity for highly targeted narrowcasting on the other, how do we begin to draw the parameters within which we think about the media?
The conference will bring together scholars and practitioners to answer these questions which rest in the cusp of media, politics and culture.
Recognising that the media industry and communication content and policy are central to the relationship between Australia and its Asian Pacific neighbourhood, we particularly wish to open up a discussion about convergences and contradictions in the media policies and media cultures in the Asia Pacific region, including Australia. We hope that such a discussion will lead to concrete and applicable structural and policy proposals for Australia and for regional
organisations
With this in view, topics and themes for discussion will include:
Media histories
Media/communication policies
Media law
Global technologies and regional consequences
Program production and regional trade
A second set of conference themes emerges from questions about the role that the media plays and more importantly could play in the most significant issues of this region. We would want papers to address these issues both analytically and normatively:
Communicating Ethnicity and identity
Communicating health and sexuality
Communicating Human Rights and Democracy
We invite theoretical and empirical contributions to the discussion, and we welcome proposals that might be critical, challenging and controversial!
We welcome proposals for individual papers as well as workshops and panels from government, industry and community groups in addition to the academic community. Abstracts of no more than 250 words are to be submitted by 31 July, 2006 to the Media-Asia Research Group, which is responsible for the organisation of the conference through the conference website listed below.
Proposals should include: Title of paper, abstract, format (single paper, workshop or panel), Author’s name(s) and biodata (50 words), equipment required (VCR, data projector etc), institution of affiliation and contact details (email, fax and phone).
