Resource Ecology Group
Wageningen, 6700 AA (Gelderland), 38 hours per week
Wageningen University and Researchcentre
Job description
The aim of the project is to understand large-scale movement patterns of migratory waterfowl from habitat spacing, habitat quality and the effects of predation/disturban ce. An understanding of what determines the choice of stop-over sites helps to predict the impact of climate and habitat changes on the migratory route and indirectly on the population dynamics. The latter insight may help to put the management of wintering waterfowl in The Netherlands in a broader, international, context.
On a yearly basis a number of individuals will be equipped with GPS-loggers/ transmitters in addition to neck-collars. Data wil be collected on grass growth and intake/fuelling rates. A model wil be developed which describes grass growth as a function of day length, temperature and rainfall. The short-term effect of predation will be studied by comparing the behaviour of the birds in disturbed versus non disturbed (protected) sites.
