The CERN Fellowship Programme

The Fellowship Programme has been reorganised. In particular, the eligibility criteria have been modified and the previous age limit removed, introducing an experience-based classification system.

The two following sub-programmes for CERN Fellows have been defined:

The Senior Fellowship Programme, addressed to people with a Ph.D. or at least four years of experience after the degree which gives access to doctoral programmes. In both cases, a maximum of ten years of experience after the degree which gives access to doctoral programmes applies.

The Junior Fellowship Programme, for holders of at least a Technical Engineer degree (or equivalent) and at most a M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) with not more than 4 years of experience.

For candidates who have obtained a diploma entitling them to commence doctoral studies in the country in which the diploma was obtained, experience is defined as the number of full years of research, starting from this degree and up to the date of the relevant selection committee.

Research fellows in experimental or theoretical physics normally have terminated their studies for a doctorate (PhD or equivalent), leading to a Senior Fellow appointment.

Fellowships in applied science, computing and engineering are open to recent graduates at Bachelor level and above, leading to either a Junior or a Senior Fellowship depending on the qualifications and experience of the individual.

Research Fellows in theoretical or experimental particle physics have a free choice of the research topic that they wish to study; applied science Fellows are assigned to a project determined in advance.

Fellowships are granted for one year initially and are normally extended for a second year. Extensions for part or all of a third year are granted only in exceptional circumstances.

All applications for Fellowships are considered by the Fellows and Associates Committee (AFC) which meets twice per year, usually in May and November. Successful applicants will be offered appointments which normally begin within six months of the meeting.

How to Apply:

Fellowship candidates should register and apply using the CERN e-recruitment system, ERT (http://ert.cern.ch).

Candidates can follow this link directly to the job posting and click on "Apply/Postulez at the bottom of the page. First-time users will be asked to register. The system will then guide you through the application form. You should complete all relevant fields on the application in English or French; if you have difficulties with the e-recruitment system, please contact the Recruitment Service (Recruitment.Service@cern.ch).

Applications from candidates in particle physics are forwarded by us to the appropriate* National Delegations in the Member States for appraisal.

*The appropriate National Delegation for each candidate is usually considered to be the same as the passport nationality of the candidate. However, applications from Member State candidates who did/are doing their PhD in a different Member State from their passport nationality are generally submitted to that Delegation. If relevant, candidates should state their preference of Member State on their application (in the "Remarks" section).

Candidates who are re-applying for a Fellowship in any field should note that they will be asked to provide new recommendation letters.

The application and ALL supporting documents should reach CERN (or be submitted using the e-recruitment system) by the closing date. Any supporting documents which are on paper, particularly reference letters, may be submitted in paper form. They will be attached by us to the candidate's electronic application. We accept reference letters by postal mail, fax and e-mail (contact details are here).

Please Note:

In all cases it is up to the applicant to ask the referees to send/submit their letters of recommendation by the deadline indicated. CERN does not issue any reminders, although candidates will be able to check the status of their application on-line at any stage. Applications which are incomplete (e.g. missing reference letters) as of the closing date for a given meeting may be delayed to the subsequent meeting of the Committee.

The official languages of CERN are English and French. The application form may be completed in either language, and to ensure proper consideration by the Committee, letters of recommendation should be written only in English or French. Candidates will be informed of the results of their applications within two weeks following the Committee meeting.
